Slavery in Mexico

Slavery in Mexico

How was Slavery in Mexico

Slavery in Mexico had been here since the early 1500’s starting because of the African Diaspora which is the movement of africans throughout the world. Around the 1500’s a large amount of African Slaves were brought to Mexico. It was stated that during the 1520’s the atlantic slave trade had brung about 200,000. Many blacks had been born over there in Mexico and also had been enslaved.(Palmer) This shows an example of the African diaspora because it shows the amount of slaves that were brought from African by the spaniards to go to Mexico to be enslaved. The treatment of slaves in Mexico had been really bad. It states “As in the rest of the Americas, slavery in Mexico exacted a severe physical and psychological price from its victims. Abuse was a constant part of a slave's existence; resisting oppression often meant torture, mutilation, whipping, or being put in confinement. Death rates were high, especially for slaves in the silver mines and on the sugar plantations.” (Palmer) This shows the crucial treatment of enslaved people during the time and this is how life was during the time period.

Slavery Resistance

How did slaves fight back

As the black community increased in became easier to rebel. Many black communities recognized their freedom and choose to rebel with the first recorded account of rebellion of blacks was in the year 1537.(Palmer) This shows that they rebelled at one point with Blacks finally realizing that they deserve freedom. As a community they had viciously rebelled. It says “Other slaves rebelled or conspired to. The first conspiracy on record took place in 1537, and these assaults on the system grew more frequent as the black population increased. Regardless of the form it took--escape or rebellion--resistance demonstrated an angry defiance of the status quo and the slaves' desire to reclaim their own lives."(Palmer) This shows that many slaves had been angry so they had rebelled to get their freedom back even if it was dangerous.

African Culture In Mexico

Finding African Diaspora and Culture In Mexico

There isn't as much information about African culture because many Africans had chosen to identify themselves as Mexican. Many Africans really didn’t choose to embrace their culture. They don’t really see themselves as africans anymore so they identify as Mexican(Palmer)This shows the fact that they don’t want to be identified as African. Their children don’t get to hear about their ancestors because many Africans forgot their culture. “Beyond that, Africans in Mexico left their cultural and genetic imprint everywhere they lived. In states such as Veracruz, Guerrero, and Oaxaca, the descendants of Africa's children still bear the evidence of their ancestry.”(Palmer) This shows the fact many africans don't represent their cultures and have little information to what their culture really is.
